Wednesday was our last day at Foresteria. We planned to have ‘a day off’ to relax, pack leisurely, and enjoy the orchard property with a long walk. Best laid plans and all that. We awoke to gray skies (no complaints here after brilliant sun in Florence and previous lovely days in Cortona and Siena) with the promise of rain. Several in our group had planned to drive to Pienza for a last outing and then return the cars. Instead we all stayed ‘home’ – some naps, some packing, some reading, etc. The drivers and navigator drove the cars back to Arezzo where Marian, our innkeeper, was kind enough to pick them up, drive them to pick up our take-away dinner, and bring them back to us.
We had a wonderful last dinner (caneloni, lasagna, focchia, salad, and, you got it, lots of wine.). Although we had several desserts – much more than we needed, most decided to head to bed without any. A few off us (me included) forced ourselves to indulge….and off to bed we went.
Somehow I forgot to mention the ‘water issues’ of the past few days. We had varying episodes of no hot water, no water at all, low water pressure, etc. Those in the 3 bedroom villa had the most difficult situation with no hot water at all and then no water for several days while the local plumber made several trips to Foresteria, replaced a part and determined that there was a leak in the pipes in the main villa that could not be fixed while we were there. Marian opened several empty rooms and those staying in the villa in the main building trudged over to our building for showers. Needless to say, an inconvenience, but dealt with in good humor. Marian gave us a bottle of Vin Santo one night and forgave the price of several bottles of wine on the last day. We paid off our bills on Wed evening and were very ready for the luxury of cruising on a new ship on Thursday.
